    Mary’s House Chapel Appeal

Happy Feast of Our Lady of Walsingham! As many of you will know, over the past two years we have been running a major fundraising campaign for the purchase of a house in Walsingham which we had been offered. We are delighted to announce that we have now purchased the property with our house in Dereham remaining as our formation house.

When we first embarked on this campaign it was with total trust in God’s providence, recognising that if he wanted it, he would bring things through to completion. The campaign was called Mary’s House Appeal as we see our mission house being very much a house for Our Lady, to be used to spread the joy of the Annunciation and to be a place of welcome for all the people she may bring there in the future.

We cannot thank you all enough for your donations and prayer support that made the purchase possible. We said throughout the fundraising campaign that even the smallest donation makes a difference and it really did: in the end it all built up and enabled us to obtain this amazing and unique property. As none of the rooms are suitable for a chapel, the fundraising will continue so we can eventually, with the necessary permissions, build a small chapel in the beautiful gardens.

Visit to the Cathedral of Our Lady of Walsingham

Please pray for Sr Camilla and Sr Catherine as they cross the pond for a week’s visit to the Ordinariate Cathedral of Our Lady of Walsingham in Houston, Texas.

Friends who live in the parish are generously organising our visit as we develop further links with the US. Since our visit to Virginia, New York and New Jersey last year we have sensed a real interest amongst Americans for the Church over here and affection for Our Lady of Walsingham. We look forward to visiting this amazing shrine to Our Lady of Walsingham, the largest Church dedicated to her in the US and a growing parish. They have a large replica of the arch in the original abbey grounds, as well as replica of the slipper chapel reredos.

We will be there to celebrate the patronal feast of Our Lady of Walsingham on Saturday 26th and look forward to meeting many people and experiencing the beauty of the Ordinariate Liturgy, as well as sharing snippets of our charism and the message of Walsingham.

    Sr Mairead Renews Her Vows

Having just finished her week of silent retreat in one of our shepherd’s huts, Sr Mairead renewed her vows during Mass on the Solemnity of Our Lady of Walsingham, 24th September. Not only is this day the major feast day of our community, it is also her birthday. So celebrations were bound to be extra special.

Again we thank the Good Lord for the gift she is to our community and all the ways in which she serves him, especially through her prison chaplaincy work.

Retreat Day with St Bede’s Inter-Church School

We had a wonderful day on Friday when we welcomed a group of Y11 girls from St Bede’s in Cambridge to our home in Dereham in the morning and then travelled with them to Walsingham. As a thank you, Ms Harvey who helped organise the trip made a mini Sr Catherine amigurumi figure! We think it will have to be our new mission mascot when we travel around.

We spent the morning sharing with the school group more about our life as religious sisters and showing them around our chapel and hermitages. After a packed lunch and a few games of table tennis we all headed to Walsingham for the afternoon, learning more about its message visiting the Anglican Shrine, the Church of the Annunciation and St. Seraphim’s Orthodox Chapel. We then parted ways at the Walsingham to Wells light railway as they headed over to the coast to end their day.

Thank you to St Bede’s for the visit, we hope they enjoyed the day as much as we did!

  • Sr Valentina Renews Her Vows

    Sr Valentina Renews Her Vows

Congratulations to Sr. Valentina who renewed her vows on the Memoria of the Holy Name of Mary.

We thank God for her yes and the spirit of joy she brings to our community. Please pray for her as she continues this journey of discernment.

Once a sister has taken her first, or temporary vows she enters a stage of formation known as Juniorate during which vows are renewed annually for a minimum of three years whilst the journey of discernment and formation continues. The sister and community may then discern that the time has come for final vows or permanent profession where vows are made for the rest of one’s lifetime.

  • Entry into Novitiate and First Profession of Vows

On Monday 23rd September, the vigil of the First National Feast of Our Lady of Walsingham, early in the morning during morning prayer, Valentina (originally from the mountainous regions of northern Italy) was accepted into novitiate in our little chapel. On this occassion she also received the community medal which shows Our Lady of Walsingham on one side and the scene of the Annunciation on the reverse side.

Religious Life begins officially in the Novitiate. ‘The purpose of the novitiate…is to give the novices a greater understanding of their divine vocation. At the same time their resolution and suitability are to be tested (Code of Canon Law, 641-645).’  The novices need to be properly prepared for religious profession according to the exigency of religious life and the charism of their community.

The whole day was one of immense joy as we also welcomed Mairead’s family, friends and guests for her first profession of vows after evening prayer. This happened during Mass, celebrated n the local parish Church in Dereham by Fr Mark Hackeson (an old friend of Mairead’s and now based in Swaffham). It was so good that many of the local parishioners were also able to attend, many for the first time, a religious profession.

In Sr Mairead’s own words: ‘How can I speak of the day: amazing, never thought the day of my first vows could be filled with so many graces and blessings.  It was wonderful to share the day with some of my family from Ireland and France and friends from different parts of my life in the UK and of course with my sisters in COLW. All have been part of the journey to this every special day. I really feel that I am answering a call from God and I trust Him in the path He is leading me on. It is hard to pinpoint one moment in the past when I first thought, “Is God really calling me to religious life? No, He can’t be, so I’ll ignore it!” God had other ideas, in particular over the last 7 years and gradually an ever deepening desire to know more about my faith and COLW, helped me overcome fears and gain the courage to take the steps leading to first vows’.

After Mass we all went back to our convent for a special and plenteous meal and an amazing cake (photo below right). It was made by Sr Gabi & decorated by our postulant Kate – even the primrose flowers were homemade. As you can see from the dove, Sr Mairead is a great lover of the Holy Spirit :-). The celebrations went on for a while and could not have gone better.

Photo below left: Sr Mairead with (from left) her sister Fiona, mother (Josie) and brother (Anton)

The vows of consecrated life are means by which a sister seeks to be more closely configured to the One she loves. Living these vows draws her into the Paschal Mystery of Jesus. She embraces a transforming love who gives meaning to all suffering and sacrifice.

Please keep Valentina and Sr Mairead in your prayers as they start this new stage of their vocational journey

  • Emotional Maturity and Discernment

    Friday 30th April – Sunday 2nd May 2021

We are called to love God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind and with all our strength (cf. Mark 12:30). Every part of our being needs to be transformed so that we can have the sentiments of Christ and so that our heavenly Father can see His Son in us.

This weekend is open to anyone who wishes to go deeper in living an increasingly authentic Christian life.

“Today we have “great brains” and “universities that teach concepts and ideas,”
and “are the heirs of liberalism and the Enlightenment,”
but “we have lost the three languages :
the language of the head – thinking
the language of the heart – feeling
and the language of the hands – doing”

Pope Francis continued to explain that
“we do not carry forward this harmony in which
one thinks what one feels and does,
feels what one thinks and does,
and does what one thinks and feels.”
He labelled this as the “harmony of wisdom.”
