With Mary, making a home for the Lord.
The soul of every Colwelian (in whatever branch she or he is in) is to become like another Holy House. With Mary as our model and our help, we are to create a place in our soul where the Lord can find a home. Not simply a home where he is a guest – more than that; one in which we consent to all that he asks of us – for we desire him as the true master of our house. Specific times of prayer to cultivate our relationship with the Trinity are set aside each day in the vowed branches to facilitate a deeply contemplative life.
We participate daily in the celebration of the Eucharist. All members are encouraged to spend 10-15mins in thanksgiving after receiving communion, which often extends beyond the end of the Mass.
The consecrated members pray morning, evening and night prayer, partaking in the universal prayer of the Christian community. Lay members can join us when they can.
We start the day with an hour’s silent adoration of the Blessed Sacrament so as to deepen in us our daily living of this mystery of the Word made Flesh living among us.
For the Word to be ‘made flesh’ in us’, we first need to ponder it in our hearts as Mary did, so Lectio Divina is done daily.
We have an extra hour’s silent prayer in our room, in the grounds, in the chapel, in the hermitage or wherever we find most conducive.
For lay members the time for silent prayer is determined by the roles and duties they have.
We recite the Angelus three times a day to remind ourselves of the joy Mary experienced at the Annunciation and to implore from her a similar fidelity to our own vocation.
We recite the Fiat Rosary after evening prayer each day. It is specifically centred on the ‘yes’, ‘fiat’ of Jesus and Mary throughout their lives.
The Act of entrustment to Our Lady of Walsingham is recited together on Saturdays
The Little chaplet of the Divine Will is said after our weekly faith sharing on the Sunday Gospel
The major celebrations of the community are the Annunciation (25th March) and the Feast of Our Lady of Walsingham (24th September). Walsingham is known as England’s Nazareth where we celebrate Mary’s ‘yes’ to God’s dream for her and the whole of humanity. Uniting us with her in a particular way at these times enables us to enter more fully into God’s dream for us and for our community.
Maundy Thursday (as the start of the Paschal Tridiuum) is also an important day for us as we are reminded that our ‘yes’ is not always easy to say. It is only by living our lives eucharistically that we will have the strength to hand ourselves over in love to God and to others.
