Mary’s Fiat at the heart of our charism.
Totus Tuus O Maria
The inspiration for the name of our community was received in the Slipper Chapel itself. We see ourselves as belonging totally to Mary, Totus Tuus O Maria, as she offers us to the Blessed Trinity. She is our mother, sister, teacher and model of discipleship and the one who is the cause of our joy. She has accompanied us closely throughout the years and we have no doubt that she will continue to do so.
The Spirituality of Walsingham is at the heart of our charism. It is the source of our desire to do as Mary has done herself: opening ourselves to God’s love and the fulfilling of his will in our lives and helping others say ‘fiat’ in their lives. Hence, the mystery of the Annunciation, of Mary’s Fiat and of the Word made Flesh, is central to our charism.
A place where Christ is welcome
When we think of the Holy House at Walsingham, we consider that it was small, simple, poor and empty. It was to bring to mind for us the house where Mary had lived in Nazareth. In this house, Mary prayed and worked quietly as she pondered the word of God. Her heart was always attuned to the Lord, in rest as in activity, seeking to please Him in every thought, word and deed. It was a place where the Word could be heard by Mary, for in this place of stillness, neither the noise of unnecessary words nor clutter of unnecessary things were present. It was therefore a place where there was space for Christ, a place where He was welcome to come and make His home.
Yes and thanks, in joy and sorrow
As we say ‘Yes’ and ‘Thanks’ to God from moment to moment, in joy and in sorrow, Christ becomes evermore flesh in us. Then, as St Paul says, we gradually become transformed into him and live as authentic missionary disciples.
